Summary | 0002960: Copyright licenses confusing
Description | Here are some copyright licenses which apply to paraview: http://www.paraview.org/HTML/Copyright.html [^] The last one says: Under the terms of Contract DE-AC04-94AL85000, there is a non-exclusive license for use of this work by or on behalf of the U.S. Government. Redistribution and use in source and binary forms, with or without modification, are permitted provided that this Notice and any statement of authorship are reproduced on all copies. --- Does this apply just to the government, or to the rest of the world as well? It would be better if this could be clarified.

It is clearly described in the first section that: Redistribution and use in source and binary forms, with or without modification, are permitted provided that the following conditions are met: * Redistributions of source code must retain the above copyright notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer. * Redistributions in binary form must reproduce the above copyright notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer in the documentation and/or other materials provided with the distribution. * Neither the name of Kitware nor the names of any contributors may be used to endorse or promote products derived from this software without specific prior written permission. * Modified source versions must be plainly marked as such, and must not be misrepresented as being the original software. The Sandia copyright is in addition to this and does not influence the first (BSD-style) license. Is there an apparent conflict between the two licenses? The Sandia license is not a restrictive license as far as I read. Furthermore, it allows redistribution and modification to all parties not just the government: Redistribution and use in source and binary forms, with or without modification, are permitted provided that this Notice and any statement of authorship are reproduced on all copies. |

I just wanted to make sure that the initial section about the government isn't intended to be exclusive to the government. Do you know that this is Sandia's intent? If so, it would be great if you would put in some sort of note to this effect in the license to make sure that people know this -- the license as written is a bit unclear. |
