Summary | 0004415: View not updated when saving animation
Description | When I save out an animation, I expect some feedback about the progress of the animation. In PV 2, each rendering would be written back to the front frame buffer so that the animation would play out in the user's GUI while it was being recorded. We should replicated this behavior in PV 3.

Updating the view while saving animations results in duplicate renders. On my machine I notice 30-40% slow down on enabling front buffer renders. (We still want the animation to use the offscreen rendered image for the movie image to avoid window overlaps etc.) Do we still want to enable updating of the view? |

No. I don't think we want a 30-40% slowdown. Is there a way to simply paste the image generated for the animation onto the GUI? |

We could theoretically paste the captured image (from offscreen back buffer) back on to the screen (i.e. onscreen front buffer). However, whenever the images are captured with magnifications > 1, the image will need to be resampled to fit to screen before pasting, which would mean extra processing for each render pass. |

We discussed this issue today at the weekly PV3 meeting (http://www.paraview.org/ParaView3/index.php/ParaView_3_Telecon_02/13/2007#Write_Movie_Progress [^]). We came to the following consensus. Writing the view images while saving the animation is not necessary. Instead, the animation progress will be given in the status bar. There will also be a button added next to the toolbar (probably with an icon like a red X) that when pressed will cancel writing out the animation. In addition, the rest of the GUI will be disabled while the animation is being saved. This will prevent the user from making changes that will screw up the animation and also provides further indication that PV is busy saving the animation. |

Added "abort" button to status bar. When saving animation the progress bar only shows the animation save progress (no pipeline progress are shown while saving animation). One can hit abort to abort saving animation. The Application does not handle any click/key events when saving animation (or when any progess is being shown i.e. some filter is executing) except those on the abort button. |
