Is volume rendering in this mode supposed to work? MPIMoveData cannot deliver anything but vtkPolyData to the render server from the data server.

This has actually never worked so far for exactly the reason you say. When I made the initial implementation I stopped trying to get data server/render server working because I didn't want to go through the heartache of implementing a repartitioning method.

I decided it was not worth doing myself, at least in the short term, because (1) Sandia does not use the data server / render server mode and (2) due to the amount of data that would have to be passed between the two servers I am not sure there is any logic in doing volume rendering in this mode.

This is a known limitation. We don't intend to fix it.
