Summary0005400: Feature request - isoVolume
DescriptionA user has requested that we re-implement the old 2.6 feature on a clip, clip function, that will work on a volume (I assume the old Box). He stated that it would also be way cool if this was a filter type, and had it's own icon (as evidentally EnSight does have).

My comments below are slightly wrong. The user wants to clip by Scalars. This is the only way we know of to create a smooth, solid object. Because of this, I am pushing the priority to a 4 and recommending it get fixed in 3.2. Adding this as an icon would be a great idea also.

* Open disk_out_ref.exo.
* Display tab/ Color by/ Point Temp
* Clip filter/ Clip function - Scalars/ Scalars - Temp/ Clip value - 500. Accept.
* Clip/ Y Normal/ Accept.
* Highlight disk_out_ref.exo.
* Threshold filter/ Scalars Temp/ Lower threshold 500/ accept.
* Clip/ X normal/ accept. Turn off visibility.
* Look at the quality of the object. Threshold is unacceptable, clip by scalars is smooth.

Note - Isosurface doesn't work, since when you cut it, it is a hollow shell inside.

We have an important customer that needs this functionality badly (the difference between using ParaView and using a different product). Thus, I am bumping the priority up a bit to ensure that this gets completed for PV 3.2

I am not sure I understand this request 100%. The user wants extract (by clipping) the volume that falls between 2 scalar values?

In ParaView 2.X, one of the clip functions is Scalars. This bug is to re-implement this in ParaView 3 (right, Alan?).

This is related to bug 0004664 which asks for the clip scalars functionality as well as the other clip/slice types. However, this part of the functionality can be added earlier because it does not rely on any 3D widgets.

That said, we may want to understand the user's use case a bit better. This feature is a bit hidden where it is. Perhaps it makes more sense for the same functionality to be in the threshold filter as a third option to the any scalars/all scalars option, but that is a different issue that should be resolved separately.

Adding clip by scalar is easily done. I am wondering, however, if the user is interested in clipping between 2 values, which is what threshold does.

That was my impression, too. However, I thought that might require some filter editing or creation, so it may not be something we want to tackle by 3.2.

The user, from what I have seen, only does a single clip by scalar. If he wants to do a threshold between two values, he could use two different clip filters. Thus, the easier case is what is required - just a clip by scalars - as implemented in pv 2.6.

The reason to do this is that threshold gives a very jaggy appearance - it either keeps cells in or out. Clip by scalars gives a smooth appearance. Contour doesn't work either - it creates a "skin", not a solid.

Added support for clipping with scalars.
