[Paraview] volume vs. surface

Hi!

When I load 3D data into Paraview, I first get shown the outline, then I change this to "surface" to see the associated attribute data. What´s the difference between "surface" and "volume"? It looks the same to me - just that I get an segmentation fault when I apply the gradient filter to the data and then want to be shown the "Volume" - why is this?
