Zoom to box, upper left side of the sphere. Be sure to have some of the zoom inside and outside of the sphere.

 Alan,

I suspect this has to do with the inherent difficulty in using a 2D rectangle to specify a zoom region with perspective projection of a 3D scene. Try turning on the "Camera Parallel Projection" setting under the View section of the properties panel. Since this turns off perspective projection, the mapping from the rectangle to zoomed view is easier and seems to work better.
