Summary0008901: Make it easy to choose defaults
DescriptionQuote from David on mailing list
"Almost every time I open a file, I find myself immediately going and changing the point size from 5 to 2, changing the colors to my color vector, and changing the display type from "surface" to "point". I have many colleagues who complain about the same thing. If you open say 5 files, this is an extra ~ 25 mouse clicks, which gets very tedious if you're doing this all day. Is there anyway (besides editing the source, clearly) that we can set these things to be defaults?"

Strongly agree with bug poster.

The default was changed from 1 to 5 because of bug 4197: http://www.paraview.org/Bug/view.php?id=4197 [^]
This bug stated that it was hard to see data sets consisting of a single point.

I would argue that it's now hard to see the detail in data consisting of even a few thousand points.

Where I work, typical data sets are at least 1 million points. Every single data set any of us loads has to be changed back to 'point size = 1' because the detail in the data can't be seen with point size = 5.

I don't imagine there's a 'one size fits all' solution to the default point size, but having the style defaults available in the configuration file (and/or better still, modifiable in the Options/Preferences window) seems like the best way around this.

Perhaps the default should still 'default' to 5 on creation of the ini file so that the data is at least visible if the user is unfamiliar with ParaView settings and/or the config file.

Can a simple check of the number of vertices in the file be done to estimate a good point size?

< 10 vertices, point size 5
10 - 50 vertices, point size 4
...
> 10000 vertices, point size 1

I bet that's annoying (because of all the different file types?), but it seems like a good solution.

The user should also then be able to change that default behavior if desired.
