Talk:Value List Widget
I like it in general. I think saving screen space is a great idea. Also, entering a range of isosurface values is not something done too many times. I would vote for a dialog for entering a range of values. Also, I am assuming the values can be edited by double-clicking? How do we convey to the user that all operations are done through a context menu?

This is the one point I'm leery about (and this applies to display settings, too) ... context-menu-only functionality doesn't lend itself to discovery on the part of the user.
In this case, maybe we could have a single "Change" or "Edit" button that pops-up the same context menu. That way you communicate the fact that the list can be modified, but you're still using a minimum of screen real-estate.
The eyeball idea is pretty slick - turning contours on-and-off without having to painstakingly delete and recreate them should be popular.

I think it's a great idea. I like the dialog for entering the range better than typing the range command in. The dialog would be much easier to code and less prone to bugs. It would also be easier for the user since they don't have to learn the range command syntax. I also think we should put some buttons on the panel. If we can think up some icons for add value and add range, those buttons can be tool buttons and take up little space.

The new design looks really good. An (optional) histogram view would be awesome. VolView already does this, I believe. We may want to make it optional (maybe a show histogram button?) because computing the histogram might take time. Also, I still vote for a dialog for creating ranges. I don't think we should be inventing new ways of using entry widgets. What happens if we decide to add the option of creating non-linear ranges? Berk 11:00, 22 Jun 2006 (EDT)
I agree w/your points, Berk. In the new design, we would:
- Directly manipulate a single value. Pressing the 'New Value' button would create a widget in place, and you'd edit it directly.
- Provide a modal dialogue for entering ranges. This could support:
- Log ranges
- Logical ranges (always create 5 evenly-spaced isosurfaces over the range of a variable)
- Others ...
I think the popup is the most direct method of range support. BTW, in the current design, there is a checkbox that would open/close the histogram, so it would be an option. --Hollywood 11:20, 22 Jun 2006 (EDT)
